COMMONLY MIS-PRONOUNCED WORDS: NUCLEAR, JEWELRY, REALTOR, & INTERAC

COMMONLY MIS-PRONOUNCED WORDS:

NUCLEAR

JEWELRY

REALTOR

INTERAC

COMMON GRAMMATICAL ERROR

The relationship between  the words "fewer" and "less"

Today's Post Proceeds:

First, let's start with the commonly mis-pronounced words:

NUCLEAR

Nuclear invites people to mis- pronounce it through the temptation of adding an extra syllable when they say the word.

Think of the word "New" and then, think of the word "Clear".

Pronounce the word "New".  Repeat it over, at least for 3 times. "New, new, new!"

Now, pronounce the word "Clear".  Repeat it over, at least 3 times. "Clear, clear, clear!"

Now, slow down.  Take a deep diaphragmatic breath, and say "New-Clear".  Congratulations!

You have just pronounced Nuclear the proper way.

PLEASE, REFRAIN FROM SAYING "NUCULAR" WHENEVER PRONOUNCING THE WORD NUCLEAR.

For further assistance, contact the writer for an appointment, with "Every Single Letter"'s Accent Reduction Tuition.

Next, let's continue with the word "Jewelry".

JEWELRY

Jewelry is commonly mis-pronounced, and invites people to have the letter " W" switched about with the letter "L".

When people make this mistake, they end up saying "Jelerwry", which is very wrong.

 Many people like gemstones.

Think of Gems, like rubies, emeralds & diamonds.  Jewels.

Now, think of the word "Jewel".

In farming, Animal Husbandry is the business of what occurs in raising breeds of animal, accent on the breeding.

A bull would be a temporary "Husband" to a prime heifer, and a skilled farmer can practice Animal Husbandry.

Adding the letters "RY" on to the end of the word Husband gives you the word "Husbandry".

Now, go back to the word "JEWEL".  Use the letters "RY' and add them on to the word "Jewel".  When you do that, it gives you the word "JEWELRY"!

There are 3 syllables in the word Jewelry.  When you separate each syllable from one another, you get these sounds;

"Jew -  Ell -  Ree".    (Jew-el-ry).

Now, to help yourself along, practice, as in the previous exercise, the correct pronunciation of the word "JEWELRY".

Say Jew.  Say Ell, and Say the Sound Ree.    Repeat it in sequence  3 - 5 times, making certain that you are not bring the "L" sound after the first "E".  In order to say the word Jewelry properly, in Vancouver, B.C., please pronounce it with the "L" sound after the 2nd "E", and be sure not to say what sounds like "Ju-lery!"

THIRDLY, The Word Realtor:

A Realtor in British Columbia is a person who has studied law of contract at University and,
upon successful examination results can apply for a license to draught and negotiate legally binding
contracts of Purchase and Sale of what is called "Real Property".
The word Realtor is meant to denote a designation of a licensed professional who represents consumers in the buying and selling of "Real Property".

When people say the word "Realtor", it should be pronounced "Real-Tor".

When something is real, we imagine that it is not fake, or false.  Real property is tangible land,
buildings, leasehold property, and the registered titles and leases thereto.

When people mis-pronounce the word Realtor, they usually do it by adding in a syllable where none exists, and say "Reel-A-Ter".  This pronunciation is a wrong pronunciation.

The correct way to pronounce the word Realtor is "Real-Tor".  Realtor is a 2 syllable word.  PLEASE DO NOT ADD AN EXTRA SYLLABLE TO THE WORD.  Practice makes Perfect, as the saying goes!

Finally, in Mis-Pronounced Words -  The Word "Interac"!

I-N-T-E-R-A-C

This word's meaning is derived from Inter (meaning between) as in "inter-relations" and the word "Access" meaning to make available.  It is commonly used in West Coast English to describe a technology allowing our banks in our chartered banking system to "interact" with one another, through encoded client banking & chip cards.

These cards provide consumers with access to a different bank from the ATM or "Automated Teller Machine" Bank Machine than their own bank.  Hence - the term, "Interac", which is really just a contraction of the words Inter & Access.

Your money is made more accessible through this technology.

THE BIG PROBLEM WITH THE PRONUNCIATION OF THIS WORD, IS THAT PEOPLE TEND TO ADD A "T" ON TO THE

END OF THE WORD "INTERAC", WHERE THERE OUGHT NOT TO BE A "T"!!

People say "Interact"!!  No! No!  Do not fall into this trap.  The correct way, in this 3 syllable word, is to say

"Inter-AK".  Please refrain from adding in a "T" where there is none.

There is only 1 "T" in the word Interac and it comes in the middle of the word, NOT at the end!

Vancouver Winter - Second Season - 2011

The First Friday in March, 2011.  A high temperature tomorrow morning of 4 degrees.  Only 20 days until the official commencement of Spring, 2011.  It looks as though the Groundhog was right.
Next weekend, on Sunday the 13th of March, 2011, book a nap into  your day timer or calendar appointment app.  Nap= N.A.P. or, Natural Activity Pause!  During the cold weather, you may find extra rest the best way to ward off a time-sapping virus, or, indeed, to get through one in a pharmaceutical-free manner! Especially on the day that loses us one whole hour!
The first day of Daylight Savings Time comes after a Saturday night.  Think about it!  Cold weather, weather for a cold, a late night out, and, boom! - Daylight Savings Time!  Remember, this is not "Summer"time!
In Vancouver, B.C., Canada, the Daylight Savings Time comes one week before the Spring Equinox.  It's best to hang the clothes in your closet by colour, rather than by Season.  Why?  Because in Vancouver, we have World Class Weather! - Weather from Every Part of the World, EVERY DAY!!

FREEDOM! With Responsibility.

Happy New Year was the greeting in the last post....and yesterday it was "Gung Hay Fat Choy's" Chinese New Year.  Busier than Bunnies in The Year of the Rabbit, Celebrants were queued up in Fraser & 23rd's Restaurant pavements,
whilst Richmond, B.C. was hopping with traffic, noise, &   orderly chaos. Once again, Happy New Year!

This morning's auditory glimpse into CBC Radio One's coverage of The Flight Out Of Egypt, Scene Seven, prompted this thought, around Freedom with Responsibility.

Here's a pertinent way to spell Freedom.
F R E E D OM =

"F"  for Freedom
"R"  for Responsibility
"E"  for Energy
"E"  for  Enthusiasm
"D"  for Daily
"O"  for Organized
"M" for Momentum

North/South Viewpoints: 3 Little Questions - Alternative Priorities!

A family friend who is an experienced ESL Teacher has recently returned from Taiwan.

We met for tea today, at my office, and the wide-ranging conversation turned to the topic of Graft in construction permits,  worldwide, vis-a-vis Safety Concerns, which to me, are paramount.

"I wonder", I mused, "Why it is that it appears as thought graft in inspections of building sites is rampant in the southern hemisphere?"

"Friendship!" my friend replied right away!  "Pure and simple!  Friendship comes first."

He went on to say there are 3 questions that are asked in such places.  The first is:
  1. How do people feel about this (meaning whatever the topic/situation may be)?
  2. Is it a reasonable plan?
  3. Is it legal?

But then, in the northern hemisphere, the 3 questions are reversed in order of concern:

  1. Is it legal?
  2. Is it a reasonable plan?
  3. How do people feel about this issue?
An interesting point of perceptions, I venture to say, and Question No. 2 could probably use some of Marshall Rosenberg's NVC tips (see ESL Post of  Saturday, August 21, 2010) for conflict resolution!

Meanwhile, Have a Happy & Safe Hallowe'en! S.B.

October's Occasional Outbursts! (From The Skies)

Rain, Rain, Go Away, Come Again, Another Day!

Or, "How Green Was My Valley"

The choice is yours.  Well, of course, not your choice as to weather it rains, or not, (unless you are truly spiritually evolved!) but, definitely your choice as to how your attitude towards the rain is!

Do you love lush, green lawns and parks?  Gardens with variety of not just colour, but also fragrance?  Then, be thankful for this rain of the day.

If you prefer desert climes, then see your travel agent.  (I know, I know, ...online bookings can be best - but beware the here-now-gone-in-3-more-clicks enticements!)  Try getting to know the difference between Price & Value.  Book your trip to a dry destination with a voice and, even better, a qualified person with whom you are having eye contact!

Happy Vacation!
